Why does Pakistan need more good news?
Journalism places its value on informing about the truth. It can be something as small as two players from rival teams bonding on the field to the ever-increasing electricity bills in the country, what matters is that the reported news contains the truth.
Truth is oftentimes one-dimensional. It could be from any section, from the entertainment industry or politics.
Hard news
The concept of hard news has made the audience turn away from the news. Hard news means any news that is consequential to the residents of the place.
The national and international crises have made people seek out happier news more. There is an over-saturation of news on social media platforms.
Seeking out ‘good news’
People are turning away from the hard news. A story about the Kohli-Shadab friendship gets more views than the local political affairs or the news about the rising electricity bills.
The bad news sells, it gets traction. But because of the over-saturation, people feel stuck in a loop of terrible headlines.
Many people have trouble dealing with the terrible nature of the news. When they can’t do anything about the stuff happening in the world, the people struggle with the feeling of guilt.
Making the public feel good
The journalists need to assess what will mitigate the harsher effects of the news. The people should not only see the facts but also some uplifting content.
It doesn’t mean that the journalists have to bring positive news related to the government or politics, anything uplifting will do the work.
It isn’t synonymous with creating an alternative story or deviating from the real issues. It is something that is required to help cut the bleakness.
Consciously searching for good news
To help the public with this, the journalists need to dedicate specific time to finding good news. There should be enough articles for the day that leave people feeling happy.
