Hands off: why social media is bad for you?

Before delving into the topic, it is necessary to understand why the use of social media has been divided into two categories: positive and negative.

When we talk about social media users who use it in moderation for the sake of knowledge to help themselves and learn, that is what we call constructive utilization of social media.

When we talk about users who use social media excessively, harming both their mental and physical health, that is what we call a social media addiction, which is perceived as a mental illness.

Social media addiction

Social media addiction is more than just using your phone excessively; it is about constantly checking your phone to obtain that dopamine rush.

It is often like devouring trash since the human brain has a limit, but people who are addicted to technology tend to absorb an excessive amount of content, which is harmful to both their mental and physical health.

Cause of social media addiction

There could be plenty of causes for social media addiction starting from patterns of one’s actions to someone facing addiction inherently. Some of the causes are mentioned below:

Fear of missing out

FOMO is a fear of missing out on what a social media-addicted person experiences. It is when the user feels that he is missing new information or trends on social media which makes him anxious therefore leading him to check his phone constantly.

Irresponsible

Addicts are greatly irresponsible because they spend so much of their time on the phone that they lose track of their time hence leading to less productivity and delay in their tasks. They also tend to lack quality time with their family and friends.

Short attention span

Addicts use their phones constantly and the notifications of social media keep them distracted leading them to have short attention spans.

Effects of social media addiction

Social media addiction is currently having a significant impact on the world’s youth, causing them to become overly reliant on technology, which is damaging their physical and mental health. This is a global issue that should be addressed through multiple campaigns and conferences on how to help our children overcome their addiction.
