All voices matter
It is no news that Hindi cinema has declined for the last few years with only below-the-par movies in the box for the audience.
Famous production houses announce their upcoming projects with renowned stars every year, but nothing has worked for them so far.
However, occasionally, they manage to grab the attention of the masses, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
When it comes to the movie Animal by Sandeep Vanga Reddy, released on December 1, 2023, starring Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor which also features Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandana, and Tripti Dimri., there is a lot of chaos among the audience.
Many people are calling Bollywood out on the below-standard movies the cinema is producing which never fail to propagate patriarchy, toxic masculinity, and misogyny in society.
In 16 days only, the film has grossed ₹816.3 crore worldwide according to the Hindustan Times. But let’s have a look at what the movie is about and what has stirred all the debate on social media platforms.
The film explores the nuanced relationship between a father and his son. A son undergoes a remarkable transformation over the years as his bond with his father begins to fracture, and due to external circumstances, he becomes consumed by a quest for vengeance.
Ranvijay (Ranbir Kapoor) is the son of one of the richest men in India named Balbir (Anil Kapoor). He has all the money in the world but the only thing that doesn’t have a price tag in Ranvijay’s world is his father’s love which he deeply yearns for.
Ranvijay is sent to boarding school due to the differences between both. Years later he returns to spend his father’s 60th birthday but is made to leave.
He gets married to his love interest Gitanjali in a private ceremony and moves to the US with her.
Eight years down the lane, Balbir is attacked by unknown Assilaints. Ranvijay returns to his country with his wife and kids to be with his family and to avenge the attack on his father which leads to a war.
The movie ends with a battle between Abrar Haque (Bobby Deol) and Ranvijay with him finding out that Abrar was behind the attack on his father.
Additionally, another character Aziz is introduced who is the clone of Ranvijay with Aziz hinted as the next villain in the upcoming sequel titled Animal Park.
The movie in general is very gory. It has received a lot of mixed responses due to Ranbir Kapoor’s character being angry at all times and the sheer misogyny and toxic masculinity it has propagated.
It’s time that Hindi cinema tries to come up with fresh concepts and up its game in filmmaking.
