Going Green: Gwadar International Airport Environmental Initiative

The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) is making waves with its latest endeavor—the ‘Green Coverage Initiative.’

Committed to upholding environmentally sustainable practices as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), NGIA aims to transform its surroundings into a thriving green ecosystem.

Phase 1 – Tree-lined Roads

As a testament to their commitment, NGIA plans to kick-start the initiative by lining the incoming and outgoing roads of the airport with lush greenery. Stretching over 3 kilometers, this tree plantation project aims to create a refreshing and scenic entrance to the airport.

Imagine driving along a road adorned with vibrant trees, providing shade and natural beauty.

Phase 2 – Greening the Airport Vicinity

Taking their dedication a step further, NGIA will transform designated areas within the airport’s vast 4,300-acre vicinity into green havens.

With an array of diverse tree species, this phase seeks to enrich the ecosystem and create a harmonious balance between nature and infrastructure.

These green spaces will not only enhance the airport’s aesthetic appeal but also contribute to the overall well-being of the environment.

Selecting the Perfect Green Ambassadors

In the scorching desert climate of Gwadar, characterized by minimal rainfall and extreme temperature variations, careful consideration is given to selecting tree species that can withstand these challenging conditions.

NGIA’s officials stress the importance of choosing tropical economic trees capable of thriving in high temperatures, salt-rich soils, strong winds, and arid environments. By selecting the right green ambassadors, the airport ensures the longevity and resilience of its green initiative.

Collaboration and Cutting-Edge Research

NGIA’s ambitious green project would not be possible without collaboration and advanced research.

Working in conjunction with the Central South University of Forestry and Technology, the China Overseas Port Holding Company Limited, and the Yulin Holding Company Limited, NGIA has established a dedicated research center within the Gwadar Port Free Zone area.

This state-of-the-art facility, known as the Belt and Road Engineering Research Center for Tropical Arid Non-Wood Forest, houses a Plant Tissue Culture Lab and Greenhouse.

These cutting-edge facilities provide the necessary resources for cultivating and nurturing the ideal plant species, ensuring the success of the green coverage initiative.

Conclusion

With the adoption of the ‘Green Coverage Initiative,’ Gwadar International Airport sets a remarkable precedent for sustainable development within the aviation industry.

By incorporating lush greenery into its surroundings, NGIA not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also demonstrates a commitment to preserving the environment.

This ambitious project made possible through collaboration and research, showcases the airport’s dedication to embracing environmentally friendly practices.
