India’s Tomato Crises

In the financial year of 2023, an annual production of tomatoes in India estimated to have amounted to 20 million metric tons which represents a slight decrease from the final year, due to the affected production rate inversely the prices has been raised which have affected people badly in such a way that McDonald run out of tomatoes in New Delhi and announced to have their meals without tomatoes for a time being.

As we know due to economic instability and other issues, usually there remain a price breakdown on certain things or we can say that prices are keeping going up and down according to circumstances.

Hence in this article we have discussed about a massive price breakdown of tomatoes in India.

Cause of shortage

The main cause being told by farmers and harvesters is climate change. Much of the counties of the world has experience unpredictable climate change in first few months of 2023 that came along heatwaves and heavy rainfall damaging crops.

In spite of this, the major cause for the shortage of tomatoes in India is flood in the cities having tomato crops.

In recent years the inconstant weather has affected South Asian countries. In India many people displaced due to flood and drought resulting which badly hits the food security of India.

According to a report, due to variable climate changes and global warming, India is emerging as region’s most affected nation in terms of crop production.

Government’s response

The shortage has baffle the government, which resultantly on June 30 in Delhi launched “ Tomato Grand Challenge Hackathon” to crowdsource ideas on how to deal with the shortage, how to overcome it and how to increase the production.

In short, government of India has not taken some advantageous step to improve and enhance the quantity of tomatoes so as to decrease the crises.

Shortages led to crime

Increase in prices, increases the rate of poverty which ultimate increases the crime. Many crimes have been reported after the price hike.

In a holy city of northern India a shopkeeper hired bouncers to avoid people from barter while a shopkeeper in Pine smacked a customer with a weighing scale. Moreover across the country many cases of stealing and hijacking have been reported.

Final Thoughts

The Indian tomato crisis needs for immediate attention and concerted efforts from stakeholders across the agriculture sector.

Identifying the root causes, supporting farmers, and implementing practical solutions will not only alleviate the crisis but also create a more resilient and sustainable tomato industry in India.
