Pakistan’s cold and dark election season
Elections in Pakistan were a big deal. The announcement of the upcoming elections was met with dispassionate air propelling the country into a cold and dark election season.
Cold and dark: what it means?
‘Cold and dark’ is readily used in the aerospace community for an engine that is completely shut off. The engine has been powered off for a while and is ‘cold’. The aircraft has no lights, so it is considered ‘dark’.
This analogy we drew means unwelcoming. The elections, which are for the public (yes they are for the public, but I guess not in our country), have lost their cheer.
The passion and zeal with which the country tackled its politics has fizzled out. People are no longer looking forward to the new era of their country.
The date for elections
The ECP has given a date, despite the pressure from the Supreme Court, the Political Parties, and the press.
The last supposed date was the last week of January but according to the ECP, the new date is Feb 8. But ECP followed up with a date in the summer for the Punjab election.
It has led to confusion about what February will bring even after the ECP’s assurance.
PMLNs momentum
Many factors are influencing the election dates. First and foremost Nawaz Sharif’s return. His return is PMLN’s trump card and they want to ride this buildup of momentum to the elections.
All the friendly countries are calling for both political and economic stability in the country. The elections are necessary for all the investments coming in from the Gulf.
On the other hand, the negotiations with the IMF are also being focused on.
PTIs arrests
The renewed arrests of PTI have caused unrest among the people. The arrest of Kamran Bangash and Asad Qaiser has caused unease. Fawad Chaudhry from PTI was also arrested.
In the country, this time around the plans of the parties and the government are not clear. The instability of the economy is even more so.
Whatever is to come in the future, people have nothing but a sense of unease and distress for it.
