Super Hot: Pakistan Heatwave to Continue

As the scorching summer sun continues to bear down on the South Asian nation, Pakistan is in the clutches of a formidable adversary: the Pakistan heatwave.

What is going on?

According to Chief Meteorologist Dr. S. Sarfaraz, Pakistan is set to face even more scorching temperatures in the coming days. Driven by a high-pressure area in the upper atmosphere, daytime temperatures are predicted to soar across the entire country from June 20 to 24.

As per the advisory issued by the department, the heatwave gripping Pakistan is expected to intensify further.

Daytime temperatures are projected to hover between 4°C and 6°C above the normal range in upper and central Punjab, Islamabad, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, in Sindh, south Punjab, and certain areas of Balochistan, temperatures are anticipated to be 2°C to 4°C higher than the usual seasonal levels.

Calling for global action

Earlier, Amnesty International, a renowned global human rights organization, has issued an urgent plea for immediate international action to safeguard Pakistan from the devastating impacts of extreme heatwaves.

In a report released on World Environment Day, Amnesty International declared Pakistan as being on the “frontline of the climate crisis,” emphasizing the country’s vulnerability to heatwaves due to the lack of adequate resources for its citizens to protect themselves from soaring temperatures.

Titled “A Burning Emergency: Extreme Heat and the Right to Health in Pakistan,” the report extensively examined the dire consequences of searing heatwaves on the population residing in some of the world’s hottest cities within the country.

According to the report, Pakistan, despite being responsible for less than 1 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, has consistently ranked among the top 10 countries most severely affected by climate change-related disasters over the past two decades, according to the Global Climate Risk Index published by Germanwatch, a nonprofit organization based in Berlin.
