The Earth Overshoot Day
Each and every day in a year is related to something means there is every day there is an event.
Earth Overshoot day is celebrated on August 2 of every year. Earth Overshoot is an annual event on which the annual resources humans extracts exceeds the Earth’s ability to regenerate them in the same year.
This day plays its role as a reminder for mankind of the environmental problems we face due to overconsumption and unsustainable practices.
Understanding Earth Overshoot Day
The day is calculated by the Global Footprint Network that is a research organization which measures human’s ecological footprints based upon variable factors like food consumption, carbon emission, and depletion of resources and usage of water.
Lately, these footprints are compared with the Earth’s bio capacity (the capacity of Earth to regenerate resources and absorb water). When the consumption overlaps the regenerative capabilities, Earth Overshoot Day reached.
Significance and Implications
The shifting date of Earth Overshoot Day over the years indicates a troubling trend of ecological overshoot. In past years, this day becomes much later and gives Earth enough time to regenerate the resources.
However, due to overpopulation the consumption has increased and resultantly the day has arrived earlier.
This indicates that we are pressurizing the plant’s ecosystem and leading our planet towards deforestation, biodiversity loss, climate change, drought and other environmental problems.
Each year this day serves as a wake up call for every single individual to reexamine their practices and steps towards sustainability. Moreover, this day spotlights the need for global corporation to make effective strategies for the reduction of ecological footprints and preserve the Earth’s natural resources for up comping generation.
Following are the ways to regenerate or to reverse the resources for our planet.
Renewable Energy
The best way to reduce carbon emission is to use renewable energy resources instead of fossil fuels which decreases overall ecological footprints.
Conservation and Reforestation
Protecting natural habitants and planting more and more trees ultimately reduces ecological footprints and makes environment clean.
Responsible Consumption
Every natural resource should be used precisely and according to needs. Using environmental friendly products and energy-efficient appliances are the major steps towards sustainability. Moreover say no to plastic bags.
Food Production
Food production should be made more sustainable. Every year billion tons of food is wasted. Hence there should forecasting of global food accurately and production of such food should be made which humanity needs.
Global Population
Another major reason of overshoot is global population. By having a control over population we can efficiently reduce ecological footprints and make our Earth health and clean.
Final Thoughts
Earth Overshoot Day serves as a good reminder to prioritize environmental stewardship. By making people aware of the consequences we can bring huge change sin the Earth’s biological system.
It demands a collective efforts of every individual to work together and crate a balance between the their need and Earth’s capacity to sustain us. Earth’s Overshoot Day should motivates us to obtain sustainability and makes Earth a better place for the upcoming generation.
