All voices matter
Till now, I have visited many spots in Karachi but the most satisfying part of my journey is when I encountered the old Karachi.
Shaheen Nauman is the first lady who leads their own historical tours. On HWK’s website, we came to know that Shaheen Nauman is well-known for the history and stories of old Karachi. Every Sunday we went on tours with her. The passion and determination in her voice reflect her care for the town.
Our journey began at Pakistan Chowk and ended at Karachi Sweets. She told me about the restoration of the Chowk. Here we saw many old buildings and trees.
There were two periods when the construction of buildings was on its hike. One is 1930s and the other is 1880s to 1890s. Moreover, when the city was capital many offices were situated in these buildings.
Many other old spots were present there. These old town areas have faced water shortages and still use carriages to bring water from government pipelines. Old fountains are also found which were earlier used due to scarcity of water but now have become obsolete.
In addition to this, I observed that the meal shutters are replaced by the old wooden doors. Narrow streets, stone facades, cross ventilation, and many others are the main models of architecture there.
Nauman said that the people who are still not convinced whether they like to explore the older parts of Karachi I would like to say to them that “seeing is believing”. With this, our tour ended
Indeed the ancient spots, architecture, and many other buildings are the great work of ancient times. We should visit these places to gain more knowledge and the courage to take care of these cities.
