Why is poetry important?
Poetry is the art of painting with words. It can take you into the depths of despair, fill you with motivation, or convince you that the sky is red, all in a few short sentences.
Sounds untrue? It might, but it was poetry that motivated the Muslims of the subcontinent to rise against oppression. It is poetry that gives us instances and recordings of history. Poetry is the language of the religion of Hinduism. I’m sure you never thought of it this way, but poetry is an ancient vessel that contains in it the wisdom of eons.
Poetry as a vessel for history
When we look at Mughal buildings, we see a lot of poetry inscribed on walls, and old English cemeteries have inscriptions of mourning and loss etched into marble. Ancient Rome and Greece have fables that are written in songs and poetry. Poetry has always been held in the highest regard in literature and its significance in history does nothing but prove it.
Poetry as a vessel for romance
Ever had a lover write a poem for you? Whatever your answer is I am sure that we can agree having poetry written about you is one of the most flattering forms of romance to exist.
People have been recording their love in stanzas since the inception of language, from Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe to the thirteen-year-old boy trying to woo his first crush. The instance of love in poetry has never fallen short.
Poetry as a vessel for education
We’ve looked at romantic instances as poetry, but have you ever considered the practical side of it? Ever noticed that children are often reciting nursery rhymes? That is not a coincidence, studies show that rhyming stanzas and the building of poetry not only help children’s vocabulary.
It builds brain power, by predicting what word will come next or how to make something rhyme. The best way to teach someone how to use their brain is through poetry.
The world of literature is never ending and this genre of literature is an amazing place to get lost in. Its highs and lows are accompanied by a beautiful grace and every experience is different. Maybe the reason poetry is important is that it belongs to all of us and none of us at the same time.
