Saheefa Jabbar highlights ‘Mayi Ri’s disturbing themes
Saheefa Jabbar Khattak, a popular Pakistani actress and model, ventured into the drama industry after winning accolades at the popular lux and hum style awards. The actress is not a fan of the popular ARY drama ‘Mayi Ri.’
The drama was promoted as a woman’s bold stance against cultural appropriation and generational trauma but has instead been glorifying the horrible practices it was supposed to reproach.
The drama follows an underage protagonist being forced into a cousin’s marriage. Not only does it not dissuade the audiences from the horrors of underage marriage and forced consent, but the drama builds a romance between the two leads promoting the noxious cultural practices.
On top of that, in the recent episodes, the drama depicts child pregnancy in a positive light.
Horrified at the popularity of such a script, Saheefa Jabbar has taken to social media to air her concerns about what this show is teaching our youth.
She goes on to describe the toxic elements of the show, especially highlighting underage marriage. Our childhood is a beautiful time, which should be spent on education and building our lives.
Why are they stealing our childhood from us? Saheefa asks. Young minds are groomable, and showing such concerning media to our younger generation is only contributing to the concerning practices of cultural curses.
