Bala Hisar Fort is one of the most historic places in Peshawar. It is from a Dari Persian word, meaning, ‘elevated or high fort’. The fort has an imposing presence, on the GT Road.
Role in the history of Peshawar
Bala Hisar Fort has played an important role in the history of Peshawar and its surrounding region. It is a witness to various sieges, and battles and was occupied many times by different conquerors and rulers. Despite its military significance, it has also been a cultural historical, and political center.
Construction
It was built by Babar, in 1526 after capturing Peshawar. It was the total residence of the Durrani Family before being captured and destroyed in 1834. It was rebuilt by Sikhs with mud and later rebuilt by the British with bricks. It is now the headquarters of the Frontier Corpse.
Location
The excess to Bala Hisar Fort is limited for the people. It is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays. The Bala Hisar Fort is situated roughly at a height of 100 meters.
It has a breathtaking view from the top. It has a surface area of 10 acres. Its vantage point on high hills provides a panoramic view of Peshawar and its surrounding valleys.
The mountain view from the top is very captivating. On a clear sunny day, you can have a view of the surrounding hills and sales which are very charming. There is also a military museum in the fort. The museum holds different military uniforms, weapons, relics, and paintings. It can only be visited after a special permit.
Although the fort has lost its ancient grandeur it is still majestic and imposing. Its lost grandeur can still be found in some of its halls, parapets, and passages.
