Wonka leads the box office as it bags $150 millions globally
Warner Bros. appears to have won the Golden Ticket this past weekend. Wonka had a successful domestic opening weekend, as well as a successful second weekend, and its global and domestic box office exceeded expectations.
The Willy Wonka origin story debuted in North America with a strong projected $39.0 million, leading the domestic box office chart.
The international tally for the December 15-17 weekend was verified as $54.2 million from 77 countries, bringing the total after two weekends to $113.2 million. The global figure is $152.2 million.
If you are wondering what the movie is about, then we got you covered. Here’s the summary:
Wonka is a musical fantasy film. It covers the origin tale of Willy Wonka, a character from Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, focusing on his early days as a chocolatier. The film stars Timothée Chalamet in the lead role.
Following Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), it is the third live-action version of Dahl’s book.
In a delightful two-hour musical comedy inspired by Roald Dahl’s Wonka stories but not related to them, filmmaker Paul King’s prequel “Wonka” exemplifies that dictum.
The picture tries to elicit a few sympathetic tears from the audience, but it is more satisfying to entertain, thrill, and generate applause when the bad guys are destroyed.
The performances, costumes, lyrics, and choreography are arguably better than needed to make this project a smash.
